Are a rich source of essential fats- predominately polyunsaturated fat (57% of total), monounsaturated fat, (33% of total fat) and a low proportion of ‘unhealthy’ saturated fat (6% of total fat). They are free from trans fats and dietary cholesterol
pine nuts:
- contain 140mg of plant sterols per 100g. 2-3 g of plant sterols per day may help to lower blood cholesterol levels by about 10% by reducing cholesterol reabsorption in the intestine
- contain plant protein- the amino acid- arginine- which is the building block of protein which is converted to nitric oxide in the body which helps blood vessels to dilate and remain elastic
contain useful amounts of
- iron– 30g gives 10% of the daily RDI
- zinc- 30g gives 10% of the daily RDI
- manganese- important for bone formation and the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrates
- 30g of pinenuts provides around 10% of the DRI of niacin (water soluble Vitamin B)
